The society is a non-profit organisation and operating costs are financed by membership subscriptions and donations. There are many ways you can help the Genealogical Society of Victoria.
- Volunteering as our Society relies on volunteers to help us in many facets of our work. There are wide range of tasks, both from home and at our premises in Melbourne.
- Money and Library Donations plus bequests are also appreciated.
The Society in recent years has worked hard to place the GSV in a sustainable financial position. The focus has been on the difficult balancing act of both reducing costs and improving our service delivery and resources for members. You will have read in Ancestor about the innovations and new developments we are bringing to you through the library’s services, our research days, discussion circles, talks and seminars.
The GSV relies on the ongoing support of our members and volunteers and ask when considering tax-deductible donations, could you please give favourable consideration to making a donation to the GSV? Your financial support is fundamental to helping us maintain the library and ongoing operations of the GSV.
Donations of $2 or more to the Society are fully tax-deductible and can be made through the ‘Donate now’ button on the bottom of GSV homepage, by phoning the GSV Office, posting a cheque or credit card details, or simply at the reception desk when you are next visiting the library. All donations are very much appreciated.
A decision to include a bequest in your Will to the Genealogical Society of Victoria helps the Society move into the future with a strong financial base. This will enable another generation of family historians to discover their ancestors.
Donations to the library are welcomed. Please check the library catalogue to ensure the item is not already held in the collection. Please read and complete the Donation Form which should accompany any donated items.
Whilst the Society employs a small number of paid staff a great deal of the work and services offered are undertaken by volunteers.
Anyone with an interest in family history and time available is welcome to contact us. Please be aware that roles require membership of the GSV.
It's up to you to decide how much time you want to commit, but we generally ask our volunteers to commit to a regular roster. We also ask that we be notified when volunteers are unable to attend their rostered time.
Appropriate training and mentoring will be provided, in a pleasant, sociable, supportive environment.
New Library Research Assistants are always welcome. If you are familiar with using our library resources, especially the catalogue of our holdings, please email us (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you can offer some time to help other members. Our ideal would be a half day on a weekly basis, but we are open to all offers.
